Scope and Content

Correspondence with Emily Hobhouse (1860-1926), social activist and charity worker, relating to a request that Scott publish a piece by Hobhouse opposing [the First World War] entitled 'To Women Throughout Europe', urging women to unite in the cause of peace. A copy of the appeal is included. There are details of the views of a Belgian staff officer [on the First World War], reported by Hobhouse, with reference to the [First World War], the potential annexation of Belgium, and a desire for peace. Also included is Scott's response, expressing the view that opposition to the [First World War] is futile, though Scott also expresses admiration for Hobhouse's spirit.
