Correspondence with Robert Howard Spring (1889-1965), novelist and journalist, relating to an expression of thanks by Spring for the consideration shown to him by the Manchester Guardian [following his joining the Army Service Corps during the First World War, shortly after employment by the paper]. There is also discussion of a query by Spring as to a junior reporter who receives a higher salary than himself from the paper, assurances that there is no dissatisfaction with Spring's work, and arrangements for a redistribution of responsibilities.

There is correspondence between Spring and E.T. Scott relating to Spring's resignation in order to take up a post at the Evening Standard, accompanied by a related internal memorandum. Also included are internal memoranda relating to references made to Scott in Spring's biography, In the Meantime, with discussion of the paper's review of the book, and intention of making no further comment.
