Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir James John Joynton Smith (1858-1943), businessman and newspaper proprietor, relating to acknowledgement of thanks from Smith for arrangements and assistance provided to him in London by James Bone, journalist, accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is a letter of introduction from Smith for [George] Warnecke, journalist, and discussion of arrangements for Warnecke to provide a cable service to the Daily Guardian with a selection of material from the Manchester Guardian.

There is an expression of thanks by Scott for extracts of the Daily Guardian provided to him, with reference to the visit of [Edward] Theodore, politician, to Britain, and discussion of the difficulties in starting a new newspaper. Also included is discussion of the termination of the arrangement between the Manchester Guardian and Smith's Newspapers, with an expression of thanks, which is cordially acknowledged.
