Scope and Content

Correspondence between Sir Oscar R. Hobson, financial journalist, and E.T. Scott relating to Hobson's employment as city editor of the Manchester Guardian. Also included is discussion of a request by Hobson for an increase in salary, which is granted, with discussion of terms. There is a request for Hobson to organise assistance in checking the need for any supplementary information on changes in Indian cotton duties in the India budget statement. There is also correspondence relating to Hobson's resignation in order to take up the position of editor at The Financial News, with discussion of potential successors, and a request by E.T. Scott for assistance from Hobson in interviewing them.

There is an invitation from Hobson to a dinner for [William] Eames, journalist, to celebrate his 10 years as editor of the Manchester Guardian Commercial,. There is a letter from E.T. Scott relating to confirmation of a meeting with Oliver Roskill [industrial consultant?], but an inability to suggest any potential work for him.

Also included is correspondence relating to a request by Hobson for The Financial News to share in the reports of the Manchester Guardian correspondent on the Lausanne conference, which is accepted, with discussion of terms, and of a potential exchange of these reports for a column in The Financial News on investment. The offer to renew this arrangement is made to Hobson by W.P. Crozier, following the postponement of the conference, and is accepted. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the subject.
