Davis qualified in 1978 from Edinburgh University and gained his MD in 1991. From 1988 he was senior lecturer in medicine and honorary consultant to the University of Manchester. He had previously held research and lecturing appointments in Birmingham. Davis was a member of the Society for Endocrinology and the Royal Society of Medicine.
