Fryer gained his medical education in Manchester, at Owens College, the Royal School of Medicine, the Infirmary and the Lock Hospital. He was awarded a number of prizes in anatomy, natural history and chemistry. Fryer was a general practitioner in Chorlton-on-Medlock. He was a fellow of the Linnean Society and the Obstetrical Society, London.
