Barton commenced practice as a surgeon in Manchester in 1811. In 1815 he was appointed surgeon to the newly established Manchester Eye Hospital. He was later promoted to senior consulting surgeon and, after his retirement, honorary consulting surgeon. Barton died on 16 April 1871 aged 81.
