After qualifying, Cameron served time in India and Burma. After the war Cameron was a general practitioner in West Gorton, Manchester for eighteen years. During this period he also acted as local treasury medical officer. Cameron left Manchester in 1964 to work for the Treasury Medical Service. He later was appointed medical officer for the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
