Gilman was born in Hull on 11 September 1928, he studied at Altrincham Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Gilman held house positions at MRI and Oldham. In 1957 he was appointed trainee radiologist under Manchester Regional Hospital Board and in 1959 was appointed registrar in diagnostic radiology at MRI. He was promoted to senior registrar and was later appointed consultant radiologist to Trafford Area Health Authority. Gilman was a member of Manchester Medical Society .
