Chatterjee studied at Patna Medical College in India and was captain in the Indian Army in 1944. He later moved to England where he was a clinical assistant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham before being appointed senior registrar to Baguley Hospital, Manchester. in 1950. In 1963 Chatterjee was appointed consultant chest physician in charge of the department of respiratory physiology at Wythenshawe Hospital Manchester. Chatterjee was a member of the North Western Regional Health Authority from 1976 to 1986, and was on the Manchester Council for Community Relations from 1974.
