Donnan was professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Manchester since 1990. He was also honorary consultant in public health medicine to the NWRHA. He had previously held teaching posts in public health in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Southampton University. Donnan's research interests include research and evaluation of Health Services, occupational epidemiology, coronary heart disease and risk factors in the community.
