Fasnacht was born on 13 June 1924 and was educated at St Bede's College Manchester and the University of Manchester. After qualifying Fasnacht was appointed house surgeon at MRI and later served in the RAMC. He worked in general practice in Bolton and was ordained a priest in 1974. Fasnacht was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
