Administrative / Biographical History

MD Edin 1814.

Carbutt was educated in Edinburgh before settling in Manchester. From 1816 to 1818 he was librarian to the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. Carbutt was appointed honorary physician to the MRI in 1817, and remained in this post until his death in 1836. He was the first to deliver a systematic course of clinical lectures to students, in 1833. Brockbank, in hisThe Honorary Staff of the Manchester Royal Infirmary, (Manchester, 1904), gives a personal account of Carbutt's nature. Carbutt was not particularly successful, and Brockbank puts this down to his sarcastic and critical nature. He died of a stroke on 25 February 1836.
