Dootson gained his medical qualifications from Edinburgh University in 1952. He held junior appointments in Scotland before coming to Manchester as registrar in obstetrics to Crumpsall Hospital. From 1956 Dootson was a general practitioner in Cheadle Hulme. He was actively involved in vocational training of general practitioners, and was honorary lecturer in the University of Manchester department of general practice at Darbishire House. Dootson retired in 1992.
