Davies gained his medical qualifications from the University of Wales in 1978, and took his MD in 1991. He held junior appointments in Wales and Manchester, and in 1981 began his specialism in diabetes and endocrinology with a registrar appointment at Newcastle General Hospital. Davies held senior appointments in this field in Dundee and Crewe before returning to Manchester in 1997 as consultant physician in diabetes to the Manchester Diabetes Centre.
