Bennett was assistant to the Dean of Manchester Medical School, later Senior Administrative Assistant in the Faculty of Medicine at University of Manchester. In 1991 he was awarded an honorary master of science degree by the University of St Andrews in recognition of the role he played in administering the arrangement whereby medical students were transferred to Manchester from St Andrews for the clinical component of the degree.
