Godson studied medicine at Cambridge, Owens College Manchester and Guy's Hospital. He was house surgeon at Croydon General Hospital and Guy's Hospital before being appointed resident obstetrical surgeon at Guy's. Godson was later appointed surgeon to Oldham Royal Infirmary and to Henshaw's Blue Coat School. He was a member of Manchester Surgical Society.
