Fitzgerald studied in Edinburgh, Paris and Dublin. After holding the post of senior assistant master at the Rotunda Hospital, Fitzgerald began gynaecological practice in Manchester. He was elected to the honorary surgical staff of the Clinical Hospital for Women and Children (later Manchester Northern Hospital) and was obstetrician and gynaecologist to Withington Hospital Manchester. Fitzgerald was a member of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, of which he was president, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. In 1929 Fitzgerald was one of the first to be elected fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He was a well known writer and consultant of gynaecology. During the first war Fitzgerald was lieutenant colonel in the RAMC commanding Fusehill Hospital Carlise, and in the second war was in charge of Didsbury Military Hospital. Fitzgerald died on 18 August 1944 aged seventy two.
