Cohen gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1949. He held various hospital appointments in Manchester, beginning to specialise in geriatrics during his appointment at Withington Hospital in 1952. Cohen later went to Dundee and became consultant physician for the geriatric service of the County of Angus, and honorary lecturer in geriatrics at St Andrew's University.
