Guest studied medicine at Manchester and at St Thomas's. He was surgeon at St Mary's Hospital and Dispensary, Manchester (probably from 1850 to 1856), before being appointed public vaccinator for St George's District Manchester. He was a member of the National Vaccine Establishment.
