Goodyear studied medicine at Manchester and spent two years at Duke University, Carolina, funded by a Rockefeller studentship. After qualifying, Goodyear was house physician at MRI before being appointed resident medical officer for the paediatric department of Townley's Hospital, Bolton. Goodyear was later medical registrar to Crumpsall Hospital Manchester before working in general practice in Morecambe. Goodyear was a member of Manchester Medical Society .
