Gringras was born on 6 March 1936. He received his medical education at the University of Manchester and after qualifying was house physician at Withington Hospital Manchester. Gringras worked in general practice in Poynton, Cheshire, and was clinical assistant in psychiatry at Stepping Hill Hospital Stockport. He was later appointed director of the MGB Clinical and Drug Research, Stockport.
