Barr studied at Manchester and Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. After qualifying, Barr held house positions at MRI and Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary. Barr was a member of the Royal Manchester Institution Medical Section. By 1884 Barr had moved to Bradford.
