Aikenhead was physician to the Manchester Penitentiary, consultant surgeon to Chorlton on Medlock Dispensary, and was also a lecturer in forensic medicine at the Chatham Street Medical School, Manchester. Aikenhead was secretary to the Manchester Medico-Ethical Association. He died on 22 September 1861.
