Charlton began her interest in cancer when she did a PhD into the effects of radiation on plants. This research brought her into contact with Christie Hospital Manchester. After her PhD Anne returned to teaching until 1974, when she got a contract for research into cancer education at the Manchester Regional Committee for Cancer Education (or Manchester Cancer Committee). This research project was extremely successful, and Charlton carried on her work in the field, involved in research and publications. In 1980 she was made a fellow of the Cancer Research Campaign and is particularly famous for her work on children and smoking. Charlton later became Professor in Cancer Health Education at the University of Manchester.
