Guthrie studied medicine at Manchester and after qualifying held junior appointments in London at Shadwell, Queen's Hospital for Children, and Royal Northern Hospital. In 1922 she was appointed medical registrar at the Manchester Babies' Hospital. From 1923 until 1926 she held appointments in the cardiological department at MRI. In 1928 Guthrie was appointed medical registrar at the Infants' Hospital, Vincent Square, London, a position she held for two years before returning to Manchester as resident medical officer at the Manchester Babies' Hospital. Guthrie then held positions at Ancoats Hospital Manchester and MRI. In 1933 Guthrie was appointed honorary physician to the Duchess of York Hospital for Babies (previously the Manchester Babies' Hospital) and the next year became clinical demonstrator on diseases of children at the University of Manchester. She later became honorary physician for children at Manchester Northern Hospital, consultant physician for Booth Hall Hospital for Children, and also held appointments at Withington and Wythenshawe Hospitals in Manchester. Guthrie was a member of the British Paediatric Association and a fellow of Manchester Medical Society . She retired in 1963.
