After qualifying, Beardwell held junior positions at St Bartholomew's Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital London. He was Research Fellow and Medical Tutor at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London before being appointed Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Manchester. He later became a consultant physician at the University Hospital South Manchester.
