Finkleman was born on 26 May 1906 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying he worked at MRI for a year before being appointed resident medical officer at Ancoats Hospital Manchester in 1933. He worked in general practice for a time before embarking on a career in psychiatry. In 1936 Finkleman joined the staff of Winwick Hospital, Lancashire County Asylum. In 1946 Finkleman was appointed deputy medical superintendent at Rainhill Hospital, where he became superintendent in 1949. Finkleman was also consultant psychiatrist at St Helen's Hospital, Liverpool Maternity Hospital and Notre Dame Child Guidance Clinic, as well as being lecturer in psychological medicine at Liverpool University. Finkleman died on 9 October 1966.
