Burslem took MB ChB (1944) and MD (1947) from the University of Manchester. He was a gynaecologist and obstetrician, and was consultant post at University Hospital South Manchester. He was also a lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester. Burlsem was president of the Manchester Medical Society in 1986-7.
