Anderson was born on 1 December 1940 and gained his medical qualifications at St Andrew's. He was lecturer in medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital and from 1975 lecturer in medical endocrinology at the University of Manchester. Anderson was also honorary consultant to Hope Hospital and MRI. He was fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and was honorary secretary of the Endocrinology Section. Anderson was also a member of Manchester Medical Society and a committee member of the Society of Endocrinology. He later worked for the Medical Council of Hong Kong.
