Like his father Henry Ashby, Hugh Tuke was a paediatrician, especially interested in childhood nutrition. He was born in Manchester on 16 Sep 1880 and died on 9 Oct 1952.

Ashby was educated at Clifton College and then at the Universities of Cambridge and Manchester. He began his career with resident positions at MRI and Manchester Children's Hospital, and as pathologist at Manchester Consumption Hospital. After postgraduate visits to paediatric centres in America Ashby returned to Manchester and became senior medical officer at Manchester Children's Hospital, later being promoted to assistant visiting physician. Ashby was physician at Salford Royal Hospital and Salford Schools for Mothers, and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. He was consulting physician to Princess Christian College and the Waifs and Strays Society. Ashby was on the staff of Booth Hall Infirmary for Children and was visiting physician for children to the Manchester Public Health Committee. He was also lecturer on diseases of children at University of Manchester.

Like his father, Hugh Ashby was also active in local societies, being a member of the Manchester Medical and Pathological Societies. He was one of the founder members of the British Paediatric Association, and was president in 1949. Later, he became president of Manchester Paediatric Club. Ashby was also vice-president of the Medical Defence Union.
