Carse studied at Edinburgh and at Owens College Manchester. He was assistant medical officer and pathologist at West Riding Asylum, Wadsley, near Sheffield, before being appointed medical officer for Spotland District, Rochdale Union. Haining was also in general practice in Rochdale.
