Andrew Boutflower was the second son of John Boutflower, and grandson of John Johnson Boutflower. Boutflower was educated at Manchester and Dublin, and qualified MRCS and LSA in 1868. He was briefly house surgeon at MRI, before becoming honorary surgeon at Salford Royal in succession to his father. He remained there until 1911. Boutflower was also honorary surgeon to Chetham Hospital and visiting surgeon to HMP Strangeways. A keen churchman, he was much involved with Manchester Cathedral.
