Anderson was born in 1840 and received his medical education at MRI and after qualification held house positions at MRI. He entered the Army Medical Service in 1864 and served in India in the Royal Artillery. He was on the personal staff of Lord Ripon and was made a Companion of the Indian Empire before retiring from the army in 1885. He then practiced in London in Harley Street and was lecturer on tropical diseases at St Mary's Hospital.
