Born on 1 December 1915, Appleton was educated at Manchester Grammar School. He held residential appointments at MRI, Royal National Throat Hospital, Grays Inn Road, and Royal Ear Hospital University College Hospital. In 1950 he returned to Manchester as senior registrar to the Ear, Nose and Throat Dept at MRI and Chief assistant to the Aural Dept MRI. He later was appointed consultant otolaryngologist at Oldham Hospital. Appleton was a member of Manchester Medical Society , Oldham Medical Society, British Association of Otolaryngologists and North of England Otolaryngological Society.
