Carroll trained at University College Dublin. He was registrar in urology at Hammersmith and St Peter's Hospitals, London. In 1970 Carroll was appointed senior registrar in urology to Manchester Regional Health Board, a position he held until 1974 when he was appointed consultant urologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, St Mary's Hospital and Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Manchester. Carroll was also honorary clinical lecturer in Urology for the University of Manchester. Carroll was a member of the International Society of Urology, the British Association of Urological Surgeons and the Manchester and District Medico-Legal Society.
