Adams began his career as house surgeon at MRI, later becoming honorary surgeon. He later worked as an anaesthetist at Birmingham Dental Hospital and the Out-patients Department of the Children's Hospital, Birmingham, before becoming a Specialist Dental Anaesthetist for the Public Health Department of the City of Birmingham. Adams was also a member of Manchester Medical Society.
