The eldest son of Thomas Bellot, Bellot was a pupil at Manchester Grammar School and then at MRI where he worked as a physician's clerk from 1828 to1829. He later became a surgeon to the Royal Navy where he served in the East and West Indies, South Africa, China, Australia, the Black Sea and at the Naval Hospital, Therapia, on the Bosphorus. He was a close friend of Joseph Jordan and was an accomplished Chinese and Oriental scholar. He died in June 1857.
