Atkinson worked as an anaesthetist for Manchester Children's Hospital Pendlebury, an anaesthetist and medical officer for MRI and as assistant school medical officer for Manchester Education Committee. During the war he served as a radiologist and was exposed to levels of radiation which contributed to his early death in December 1936.
