Goulden studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and held positions in Stockport as medical superintendent of the Isolation Hospitals and Police Surgeon. Goulden later practised near Radnor. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, president of the Llandrindod Wells Medical Society and a member of Manchester Medical Society .
