Ellerby (née Barnes) was educated at the University of Manchester, and graduated in 1960. She was a scientific assistant to the Medical Research Council Working Party on Tuberculosis of the Spine in Developing Countries, based in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MRI, and was a lecturer in pathology at the University between 1974-1978.
