Catlow was the cousin of Sir Robert Peel. Born in 1798, he was educated for a time at Paris Medical School before succeeding to the practice of Dr Bardsley in Manchester. A general practitioner, he was the first (joint) secretary of Manchester Medical Society from 1834-1838. Catlow was compelled to retire early due to his controversial interest in mesmerism and aesthetic medicine.
