Dewhurst qualified from the University of Manchester in 1943, he held house posts at MRI and St. Mary's Hospital Manchester, and was later a senior registrar at St Mary's. In 1951 he became a lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at Sheffield University, and was promoted to senior lecturer with rank of consultant. He was later professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital and Chelsea Hospital for Women. He was knighted in 1978.
