LRCP Lond 1873; MRCS Eng 1873, FRCS 1877.
Birch studied at the Royal School, Manchester. He held house positions at MRI where he was also assistant to the ophthalmic surgeon. He was later appointed honorary surgeon to Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary.
