Archer held house positions at Manchester Northern Hospital, Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Withington Hospital. He then held posts as Medical Registrar at Cardiff Royal Infirmary, London Chest Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary before being appointed Consultant Physician at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. Archer was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
