Forsyth was professor of health service studies at the University of Manchester from 1981 until 1988. He had studied economics and social studies at the University of Manchester, gaining a BA in 1956. In 1961, Forsyth was appointed lecturer in social administration, promoted to senior lecturer in 1971, reader in 1974, and to a chair in social administration in 1975. Forsyth studied health service policy and management and worked closely with various health organisations.
