Gaskell was a surgeon of Cheetham, Manchester, whose son married in 1861. Two Thomas Gaskells appear in the medical directories, one who qualified in 1811 and practised in St Helens and another who qualified in the 1840s and worked in Knutsford, Cheshire. It is unclear whether either of these are the same as the surgeon of Cheetham.
