Dodds was trained at Manchester Dental School, and was dental surgeon at Ancoats Hospital Manchester between 1925 and 1941. He later trained as an anaesthetist, and was honorary anaesthetist at Macclesfield General Informary and held visiting appointments at a number of Manchester hospitals.
