Chadwick studied at the Manchester Royal School of Medicine. He was a surgeon in the Turkish Army before being appointed medical officer of health for Heap District, Bury Union. Chadwick was a fellow of the Royal Medical Society, a member of Manchester Clinical and Pathological Societies, and a member of the Society of Medical Officers of Health.
