Goldthorp was born in Lincolnshire on 7 July 1933. He studied medicine at the University of Manchester and held junior positions at Bury General Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital Bury and Louth County Hospital. Goldthorp then held obstetrics and gynaecological appointments at Manchester Northern Hospital, St Mary's Hospital and Crumpsall Hospital Manchester. In 1965 he was appointed resident obstetric surgeon at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and was later senior registrar at St Mary's and at Hope Hospital Salford. Goldthorp later became consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology to Tameside Area Health Authority. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
